The Spanish Bull in Copenhagen
Art piece nr. 2 at Superkilen.
The characteristic large metal bull stands on numerous hilltops along the Spanish roads. Originally 14 meters high, but Superkilen version is cropped to 4 meters. The bull was at first an advertisement for the Andalusian wine company Osborne, who put the first up in the 1956.
The large beloved bull has since been known as a logo for all Spain and when a law in 1994 banned the road advertising and endangered the bull on its survival, it led to heated public debate. A court ruled, however, that the bull had "become part of the landscape" and had a significant "cultural and aesthetic value," which made it part of the common Spanish heritage.
The bull escaped so the slaughter knife, but the initial advertising texts were deleted and now appears completely black.
The bull was chosen by Conny and Tove who uses Superkilen along with the rest of Mjølnerparken Nordic walking club. They went along with the art group SUPERFLEX from the park's advisory team, on a journey to the Spanish Sun coast, all the way down to the bull's birthplace in El Puerto de Santa María to get the bull back to Copenhagen.
