Hauptplatz (The Main Square) forms the centre of Linz, and with an area of around 13,200 m², it is one of the largest enclosed squares in Austria. An impressive 20-metre-high column, completed in 1723, is situated in the middle of Hauptplatz. The column is made of white marble, is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and was built in gratitude for having survived disasters and as protection against fire, war and plague. As a marketplace, Hauptplatz soon helped Linz to achieve an economic recovery. Hauptplatz is still the venue for a variety of events and markets.
