The Hotel was built in 1862 by Wolfgang Grömmer as the first Mountain Hotel in Austria.
At the beginning of the 19th century., When people still traveled by stagecoach to St. Wolfgang and the painters of the Romantic St. Wolfgang "wanted to discover the new" before there was a local cog railway up to the Schafberg, the noble gentlemen from Vienna and noble citizens of St. Wolfgang were carried up the Schafberg.
In April, 1892, with the beginning of the laborious construction of the Schafbergbahn the chair carrying came to an end. Countless mules and 350 Italian foreign workers overcame these routing of the Schafberg cog railway, the pioneering company Stern & Hafferl, in only one year of construction.
