Fredensborg Store Kro has a long and fascinating history.
The Inn was built in 1723 with the aim to meet the royal guests, as Fredensborg Palace was not designed to long term residents.
Store Kro was built by the same architect as Fredensborg Palace, Johann Cornelius Krieger, who was very inspired by the Italian classicism. King Frederik IV had Fredensborg Palace build in 1721 as a love nest for him and his mistress Anna Sofie Rewentlow, which he was devoted to his left hand until his wife Queen Louise's death in 1721.
As Anna Sofie was of noble and not royal birth, their romance never recognized by the court why it was necessary to have a "hiding place" where they could be alone for the outside world condemnations.
