With its 48 metres and 15 storeys, the residential complex Fyrtårnet (the Lighthouse) not only marks the entrance to the new residential area on Amerika Plads, it is also highly conspicuous both from the city and from the water. The tower and the adjacent building are both clad in dark-grey natural slate, which was chosen to give a varied play of colours and to blend in well with the area's brick houses with slate roofs. Integrating Fyrtårnet into a block with an older building, carrying on the old building traditions of Copenhagen in the new area, was another way of making it part of its historical surroundings.
